Social Worker Candidate

Joelle Forbes is an MSW Candidate (going into her second year) at Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work, University of Toronto. Her undergraduate degree was in Bioethics, the study of how morality and ethics impact medical decisions and science. Her short-term goal is to gain competence in CA-CBT, a culturally adapted version of cognitive behavioral therapy that focuses on engaging with the power dynamics of the client-therapist relationship, perceptions of mental health, and the social location of the client. At present, she is a research assistant at Factor-Inwentash, and has worked on projects and presentations concerning mental health within the African, Canadian, Black (ACB) community, specifically with woman. With her lived experience, and educational and professional backgrounds, she aims to bring awareness to and address the systemic barriers that limit access to mental health services within the Black community
